Plant extracts as treatment for diabetes mellitus Debbri, Hawa Abdulgader Plant extracts as treatment for diabetes mellitus.

PhD thesis, University of Glasgow. Printed Thesis Information: The herbal extract of Artemisia has been regarded to be anti-hyperglycaemic since olden times and is commonly used by diabetics in Libya.

The present work was designed to evaluate, test and determine which fraction or component of the herb had the hypoglycaemic effects in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The plant extract was administered to the animals in their drinking water and body weight, food and fluid intake and urine volume were all monitored daily. Food and fluid intake and body weight gain in normal rats were not altered by treatment with the plant extract but there was a rise in the urine glucose in the first six rats but rats 7, 8 and 9 were not affected by treatment with plant.

Urine volume was increased in all rats suggesting Artemisia judaica is a mild diuretic. The streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model, used in this study, was phd thesis on diabetes with the characteristic diabetic symptoms of hyperphagia, hyperglycaemia, polydipsia, weight loss and urinary glucose excretion. When a crude aqueous extract of Artemisia was given in their drinking water, it had little effect on these symptoms after 10 days of treatment. Urine glucose was reduced in the last two days and ketones in the urine were abolished by this treatment.

Diabetes mellitus phd thesis on diabetes known to affect many and varied parameters in rat liver. Insulin, biguanides and sulphonylureas are known antidiabetic diabetic treatments.

Artemisia judaica extract was tested for its effect on hepatic steroid metabolism and glycogen phosphorylase a activity in comparison with the above drugs.

PhD Thesis Final Defense to be held on July 26,at The examination is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Thesis Title: Development of Clinical Decision Support Systems for the Management of Diabetes Mellitus In the present PhD thesis, the study and development of decision support systems for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes has been conducted.

In the first part of the thesis, phd thesis on diabetes, a comparative assessment of different machine learning and statistical methodologies towards the development of risk prediction models for the incidence and the phd thesis on diabetes of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus has been orchestrated.

The use of ensembles of classifiers, and specifically ensembles of feed forward neural networks, for the prediction of Diabetes Mellitus for Pima Phd thesis on diabetes women and Cardiovascular Diseases for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus has been examined. Several classifiers have been developed, others follow the Bagging paradigm, others are ensembles of Feed-forward Neural Networks with different numbers of hidden neurons or layers, others follow the Binary Logistic Regression paradigm, others follow the Bayesian approach, and others are variations of Decision Trees.

It has been shown that the ensembles of classifiers that have been trained following the Bagging approach and the ensembles of feed forward neural networks with different numbers of hidden neurons or layers have achieved the highest levels of prediction accuracy and their predictions are closer to the real risk scores, as indicated by the results of the Hosmer-Lemeshow test.

Quality of Life of People with Diabetes Mellitus in Greece Pisimisis, T; Quality of Life of People with Diabetes Mellitus in Greece. Doctoral thesisUCL University College London.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that influences almost all aspects of life of an individual, especially Quality of Life QoL. This PhD thesis is the outcome of a research that aimed to assess the QoL of people with diabetes in Greece. The study is important because the area of diabetes-related QoL is generally understudied and is the first to have investigated this within the Greek population. This work involved the creation of the Greek version of the Audit of Diabetes Dependent Quality of Life ADDQoL-Gr through translating, culturally adapting and validating the instrument as a QoL measure.

The version was accepted by the author and the MAPI institute as the Greek version of the ADDQoL. The QoL for people with diabetes in Greece was investigated using the ADDQoL-Gr.

An assessment of their health status using the SF, as well as the relationship of QoL and health status with medical and socioeconomic factors was also investigated. This thesis contributes to knowledge because i identifies some characteristics of QoL predictors; ii explores and prioritises QoL determinants; phd thesis on diabetes reveals the complexity of the relationship between medical-socioeconomic factors and QoL; and iv offers an instrument for measuring diabetes-related QoL for Greek speaking populations.

The main conclusion drawn from this research was that diabetes seriously affects QoL, with complications microvascular disease followed by foot amputation having the most adverse effect. Title: Clinical Application of the Food Insulin Index to Diabetes Mellitus Authors: Bell, Kirstine Issue Date: May Phd thesis on diabetes University of Sydney. School of Molecular and Microbial Bioscience. Abstract: The Food Insulin Index FII is a novel system of ranking foods based on the insulin response in healthy subjects relative to an isoenergetic reference food.

The goal of this thesis was to explore the clinical application of the FII to phd thesis on diabetes insulin dosing in type 1 diabetes. Carbohydrate counting is the current phd thesis on diabetes standard method for determining prandial insulin dose in type 1 diabetes, however only 7 studies assessing the efficacy of carbohydrate counting for glycaemic control in people with type 1 diabetes could be identified.

This study highlighted the need for research into alternative strategies to improve the accuracy of the mealtime insulin dose. The FII reveals a notable insulin demand for foods high in protein and fat, nutrients that would normally be disregarded for mealtime insulin dosing with traditional carbohydrate counting.

Compared with carbohydrate counting, the Phd thesis on diabetes algorithm was able to reduce mean blood glucose level for six foods high in protein 5. In the first randomised, controlled trial of the real-world application of the FII, the FII was phd thesis on diabetes least as good as carbohydrate counting for glycaemic control in 26 adults with type 1 diabetes HbA1c FII: Kang, Dongyang MEMS for Diabetic Retinopathy.

Dissertation Ph. As the worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus continues to increase, diabetic retinopathy remains the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness in many developed countries. Between 32 to 40 percent of about million people with diabetes develop diabetic retinopathy. Approximately 4. This glucose-induced microvascular disease progressively damages the tiny blood vessels that nourish the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, leading to retinal ischemia i.

It is a most serious sight-threatening complication of diabetes, phd thesis on diabetes, resulting in significant irreversible vision loss, and even total blindness. Unfortunately, although current treatments of diabetic retinopathy i.

Patients require repeated treatment to protect their sight. The current treatments also have significant drawbacks. Laser therapy is focused on preserving the macula, the area of the retina that is responsible for sharp, clear, phd thesis on diabetes, central vision, by sacrificing the peripheral retina since there is only limited oxygen supply. Therefore, laser therapy results in a constricted peripheral visual field, reduced color vision, phd thesis on diabetes, delayed dark adaptation, and weakened night vision.
